Challenge

Aircarbon is a carbon-negative biomaterial that transforms greenhouse gases into a biodegradable plastic alternative. Yes, that is a mouthful. Aircarbon was being transformed into fashion accessories under the brand Covalent. The company needed a slew of branded touch points, including digital experiences, that could build consumer understanding of a genuinely new, even miraculous, technology. We had to make complex science accessible, demonstrate blockchain-backed traceability, and guide users on an educational journey toward carbon-conscious product.

Process

I led brand strategy, art direction, and UX design for the Covalent Fashion product line. We wandered through multiple approaches to explaining carbon-negative technology before finding language that resonated with conscious consumers. We switched modes constantly—moving between scientific precision when coordinating with the lab team, accessibility when designing for consumers, and technical execution when building the blockchain verification system with developers.

We also needed to play with how to make complex science engaging: experimenting with animated flows, interactive diagrams, and video until we found something that educated without overwhelming. We committed to a unique verification system where each product’s on-item code unlocked its specific origin story, production data, and lifecycle impact through interactive reports and video.

Impact

The brand helped Aircarbon secure partnerships with Nike, H&M, and Shake Shack, and supported a $125M funding round. Coverage in Fortune, WSJ, Fast Company, and CNN, plus recognition in Fortune's Impact 20 and TIME100 Climate lists, established Aircarbon as a leader in carbon-negative innovation.
